Change. It’s inevitable. It’s always coming. We can only prepare for it, manage it, and do our best to make the changes be for the better.
As the company I worked for continued to grow, the projects got bigger and further away. Managing projects and living away from home was a change I didn’t see coming, but I was proud to be a big part of such a successful company, and revenue kept growing. More revenue, bigger projects, more change.
In 2015 my wife, my kids, and I were packing our bags in New Jersey to fly across the country to Southern California. We had made the decision to relocate as part of my commitment to support a challenging project in Los Angeles. A BIG change and a fresh start in a new and unfamiliar place; I remember being flooded with overwhelming emotions. My roots are in New Jersey, but my future seemed to be in Southern California.
I was sad that I was leaving my home of nearly 40 years. Sad that we were leaving behind so many meaningful relationships and memories. Sad that we wouldn’t be spending our weekends walking down the Jersey Shore.
This was my first introduction to the fear of change, and my thoughts spiraled out of control. What if we didn’t make any new friends in California? What if my kids couldn’t fit in with their new peers? How do I parent my kids when I feel so off-balance myself? How can we possibly sit inside when it is so perfect outside, every single day?
I was born and raised in the East Coast. Growing up on the New Jersey Shore was a gift and period of my life I am very grateful for. I spent a few decades dreaming of my future there. I began my career with an amazing construction company and met an even more amazing woman, my wife Tatiana.
As we started building our family, we steadily progressed through the milestones of our life together. I couldn’t wait to teach our kids how to sail, surf, and fish the Atlantic Ocean just like my father taught me.
Excited for a new adventure and to see what life would bring our way. Excited for one of the most challenging projects of my career and the doors it would open. As we boarded the airplane and waved goodbye to my family roots, I was both apprehensive and eager to experience what came next.
Southern California has been everything we could have dreamed of and more. From Laguna Beach to Santa Monica Pier and everything in between, we have had a blast. We’ve made new friends, experienced the beauty of the SoCal culture, and most importantly we have become closer as a family. Occasionally, I still miss my East Coast roots, but my renewed roots on the West Coast have been a great change for the better.
My life has blessed me with the opportunity to put down roots in two beautiful cities on opposite coasts of one of the best countries on the planet. But this country is so much more than just those two coasts.
As I grow as a parent, I want nothing as much as I want my children to grow up and experience the beauty of this country’s natural wonders. I want my kids and their families to fully immerse themselves in the many cultures and enriching environments available here.
More than 40% of Americans are living in areas that have failing grades when it comes to air quality. America is literally on fire, with extreme weather events and wildfires costing the United States more than $600 billion between 2016 and 2020.
When you add other externalities associated with fossil fuels to the mix - including transportation-based pollution, petroleum-based consumer products, the growth…. the change – it’s easy to get scared of what’s to come.
Unless we get serious about a smart transition to cleaner energy, America’s future, and that of our children, is in danger.
If we can build a sustainable energy future that relies on cleaner sources of energy, and leave a much smaller carbon footprint, we can safely hand off our country to future generations so that they can experience this nation’s greatness and safely grow their own roots for generations to come.
As a parent, this feels like a solemn obligation to my own children and the children of this country, which is a large reason I started Root Renewables, where it is our mission to help build the clean energy infrastructure needed to protect our county’s roots, from sea to shining sea.
I was not disappointed.
But America is in trouble.
At the same time, I was also excited.
While there is no question that the status quo in energy production needs to change, we are here to help develop a balanced transition with solid planning and an execution strategy built around safety, quality, and accurate market knowledge.
Fossil fuels are still the bedrock of energy generation. A myriad of technologies are being considered including wind, solar, BESS, hydrogen, CCUS, and more. Root Renewables is supporting our clients as they consider the many different options. Blending the different energy generation technologies, designing and building power plants with emerging technologies, and interconnecting them to an energy infrastructure as it is being upgraded is not easy, but it is the right thing to do. We are proud to be a part of this important part of American history.
Our vision at Root Renewables is to facilitate a safe, smart, smooth, and commercially viable transition to a greener future “rooted” in proper planning and data driven analysis of renewable energy technologies so that we can hand off a better world to our children.
